Bullitt Lecture in Astronomy

The Physics & Astronomy Department's Bullitt Lecture is a free lecture aimed at the general public, and since 2001 has presented a distinguished astrophysicist to a Louisville audience in the Gheens Science Hall and Rauch Planetarium. The Lecture is endowed through a grant from the family of William Marshall Bullitt, the Solicitor General of the United States under President William Howard Taft. The University of Louisville library also houses the William Marshall Bullitt collection of rare Mathematics and Astronomy books which includes works by Copernicus, Descartes, Einstein, Galileo, Gauss, Kepler and Newton.

The public and members of the University community are warmly invited!

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the first manned landing on the Moon, we feature a lunar theme for the 2009 Bullett Lecture in Astronomy. To do this we will have a (so far) unique double speaker format, to highlight lunar exploration past and future - and beyond. The featured speakers will be:
Ferenc Pavlics (Apollo Lunar Rover Team) - "Lunar Roving Vehicle - Spacecraft on Wheels"
and
Philip Abel (NASA Glenn Research Center) - "Current and Future Exploration of the Lunar Surface"

More information is available including an archive of past Bullitt Lectures in Astronomy, including video recordings of the lectures since 2006.

There are also Bullitt lectures in Mathematics and the Fine Arts at the University of Louisville.

Andrew Chamblin Memorial Lecture

The Physics & Astronomy Department's Andrew Chamblin Memorial Lecture celebrates the life of Dr. H. Andrew Chamblin, who was Assistant Professor of Physics at the University of Louisville until his untimely passing in 2006.

The First Annual Andrew Chamblin Memorial Lecture was held at 7:30 pm on Thursday, April 16, 2009, with a talk by Dr. Frank Wilczek, Nobel Laureate and the Herman Feshbach Professor of Physics at MIT. The Department is currently seeking to make this an annual event, and more details will be posted here as they become available.
